Daryna Zevina wins Women’s 100m backstroke semi-finals: Day three – European LC Championships
Daryna Zevina of Ukraine won the semi-finals of Women’s 100m backstroke on third day of the ongoing European Long Course Championships in Debrecen, Hungary on Wednesday, May 23.
The 17-year-old Zevina upset her competitors by dominating the second round of double lap backstroke event. She faced strong competition from Alexianne Castel of France but with her alarming efforts, she managed to outperform her over the finishing end for
first position.
Her gruelling effort remained marginally ahead of her challenger throughout the event and she hit the wall with an effort of 1 minute and 00.45 seconds.
Her invincible swim remained 0.03 seconds ahead of Castel, who proved her mettle for second position by reporting a time of 1 minute and 00.48 seconds.
Third fastest qualification spot of the event was secured by Arianna Barbieri of Italy, who remained just 0.04 seconds slower from her former finisher and emerged on the finishing end with the timing of 1 minute and 00.52 seconds.
Barbieri was followed by Duane Da Rocha Marce of Spain, who was just an inch slower from her preceding swimmer and qualified into the playoff as fourth fastest swimmer by clocking an effort of 1 minute and 00.56 seconds.
Last event of the session was Men’s 50m backstroke semi-finals, where Jonatan Kopelev of Israel served notice of his talent and entered the final round as top fastest swimmer.
The 20-year-old Kopelev outsmarted his challengers with his alluring efforts and hit the wall for first position with the timing of 24.98 seconds.
Kopelev was trailed by Mirco Di Tora of Italy, who stayed 0.25 seconds apart and completed his swim in a time of 25.23 seconds for second position.
Di Tora was chased by Guy Barnea of Israel and Aristeidis Grigoriadis of Greece, who stayed 0.06 seconds slower from their foregoing finisher and qualified into the playoff as third fastest swimmers with timings of 25.29 seconds.
The arena was stunned with the joint third finish of swimmers in the 50m discipline while these finalists will compete with each other in their respective playoffs, where the top three finishers will receive medals.
