Data Link better than Turallure and Get Stormy in the Maker’s 46 Mile
The 12 to 1 shot for the Grade 1 Maker’s 46 Mile Stuart Janney III’s homebred, Data Link, showed that he can expose the pretenders from the contenders and that is exactly what he did in the Keeneland’s $300,000 prestigious race when he entered the stretch and through it keeping Get Stormy and Turallure at bay to post an upset.
Claude R. McGaughey III trained 4-year-old colt, Data Link, had mostly dwelled in allowance and allowance/optional claimers with a single stakes race and a single graded stakes race, and the Grade 1 Maker’s 46 Mile was his first grade 1 race.
Data Link wasn’t against any mugs in the Maker’s 46 Mile, though it was a small field but all the more competitive with the defending champion looking to retain his title, Get Stormy, and the runner up in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Mile, Turallure.
The Kentucky bred son of War Front, Data Link under jockey Alex Solis trailed 5 turf milers for six furlongs in the mile long race, and suddenly made his move going up wide, and in a few long stride Data Link was able to overhaul a trio of horses.
That got him into contention, where he had a clear run with a wide open stretch. Get Stormy, who immediately after the break assumed the lead and held on to it till the mid-stretch weakened and faded away, but Data Link had one more horse to counter.
Turallure just on the inside, dueled with Data Link but with just a few yards to the wire Data Link started to inch away and in the end covered the distance in 1 minute and 34.31 seconds.
"Around the half-mile pole I saw Julien on the favorite (Turallure) and I thought I'd track him," Solis said. "I got him out by the quarter pole and he did his thing."
"This is only his second graded stakes start," McGaughey said. "He ran a good race to Doubles Partner (in the Canadian Turf) who won the race, but it was just so hard to catch up at Gulfstream. After the race I asked Alex, because I had this in the back of my mind, and he said 'I think he'll be fine there.”
