Date-Krumm/Fujiwara strain past Arvidsson/Kanepi to win the doubles title – e-Boks Open 2012
Number three seed Japanese duo of Kimiko Date-Krumm and Rika Fujiwara had to go through real tough time before winning the doubles championship battle at the e-Boks Open on Sunday. The Japanese pair outclassed the Swede-Estonian
combination of Sofia Arvidsson and Kaia Kanepi in three gruelling sets, settling the final score line at 6-2, 4-6, 10-5, to lift the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) doubles trophy in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The contest took one hour and 14 minutes to conclude, with both teams straining extremely hard to take the better of one another. Date-Krumm and Fujiwara took the upper hand early in the contest by overwhelming their opponents
in the first set. The Japanese cruised through the games with the utmost ease and went one up in no time. A fitting reply from Arvidsson and Kanepi was seen in the following set and the unseeded duo levelled the matchup at one-all. The Japanese re-devised
their game play in the super tie-breaker round and raced past their opponents in style to lift the e-Boks Open title.
Date-Krumm and Fujiwara delivered 71 per cent of their first serve on target, clinching 28 out of 42 points on it. They converted all of their five break opportunities in the matchup, whilst Arvidsson and Kanepi cashed in four
out of eight break chances to finish on the losing side in the end. The unseeded competitors had ample opportunities to edge past their opponents in the match but their error-ridden game play didn’t allow them to do so.
The contest started off with an exchange of serve breaks from both sides to take the scores to 2-2. Date-Krumm and Fujiwara shifted to rage mode and nailed two successive break points in the fifth and seventh games to close out
the opener at 6-2. Arvidsson and Kanepi broke early in the next set to lead 4-1 and a regular game was witnessed afterwards. A trade of break points was seen in the ninth and 10th games of the set and the unseeded pair took it at 6-4.
The decisive third set was dominated Date-Krumm and Fujiwara, who raced to victory with 10-5 points, coming out as the deserving champions.
