Dates for Wimbledon 2015 changes – Tennis News
Wimbledon official starting dates have been shifted after scrutinizing the needs and availability of the time slots. Players were complaining about the lack of time elapsed between the year’s second Grand Slam Championship, the
Roland Garros French Open, and the following Major tournament that takes place at the All England Lawn Tennis Club in the second last week of June. It gives just two weeks for the players to practice on the grass court after playing a prolonged clay court
season until the end of the French Open that is in the first week of June.
So, it is harsh for players to prepare for one of the four biggest tournaments of the year in just two weeks. Hence, it has been decided that the 2015 edition of the Wimbledon Championships will start from Monday 29th
June until the 12th of July. It will give ample time for the players to prepare themselves for the Grand Slam Championship at grass courts. It will also help the participants in shifting their clay court game style to the green surface and a better
competitive environment will be seen with the addition of another week’s time in the two Grand Slam Championships.
The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’s chairman, Philip Brook, gave some insight about the critical decision by stating, “The best interests of tennis will be served by allowing the players more time to recuperate and to
adjust from the clay of Roland Garros to the grass at Wimbledon. All our research indicates that there is widespread support within the game for extending the gap between the French Open and Wimbledon and, importantly, we think most players will welcome the
prospect of a longer grass court season and spending more time on the softer surface of grass.”
He further added, “In making this change from 2015 we recognise that there will be some important consequences for the overall tennis calendar.” He proclaimed that the decision was made applicable for 2015 because it will give
them ample time to schedule the season beforehand and made their job easier. It is expected that the decision will be welcomed by all tennis professionals.
