My fiance has tourette's syndrome. The cursing out loud type. My daughter is 14 mos. old and I am worried about what will be coming out of her mouth. I can't tell him to stop because he can't help it. Has anyone been in this situation?? Any advice for living with a partner who has tourette's and a toddler?

  1. Corpolalia (I think that's how you spell it) which is the name for the verbal ticcing that you have mentioned, with swearing being one of many versions of it, is so rare.  Most verbal tics are things like throat clearing, clicking the tongue and things like that.

Yes, your daughter may be more likely to get it, but she is lucky that her dad also has it and so can help her through some of the hurdles.

Her dad can't help it - asking him not to swear would be like asking him not to breathe!  His brain is wired to do this and maybe with medications, it can be controlled, but whether or not he takes them is something he needs to decide.  Then again, they might not work.

Wishing you the best for the future

  2. My brother got tourettes syndrome from the 3 in 1 ijecion for polio mumps and rubella,he had a bad reaction too it and he is 30 years old noe and he never swore, never did,the only thing he ever did was kept jerkinking on the couch when every one was relaxlaxed  and watching a film, but we love him still.he is a doctor now,my mother is so proud.xx

  3. explain to him not to take offense but tell him that when he does say something that she should not say you will correct him not to be mean to him but to teach her,you could say now dad I know you don't feel good rite now but we don't like that word, she will learn its not a good word and she will realize that he cant help it he is sick.but you two have to have an understanding first.

  4. Treat it as if your fiance didn't have tourettes. When she is young, tell her not to say those words, and explain that daddy can't help but say those things.

  5. You should get professional help, see if they can prescribe him some kind of medication that helps control impulses. He can not help it but he can make an effort to control his impulses. Otherwise, just date a normal human being. You don't want your daughter to end up like that lady in Duece Bigalow Male Gigalo, lol.

  6. No I havent been in your situation, but if your fiance was your daughters father would you be this concerned? You handle it like any other childhood situation, you correct her if she repeats and tell her it is a bad thing. When she is old enough you explain that daddy has a med problem and cant help it.

  7. only 1%of Tourettes people have the swearing one. My son has Tourettes (no swearing thankfully) and he does self hypnosis to calm it down and it has albut stopped the tics. It might be worth looking at this for him. Also explain when she is old enough they are adult words and she is not to say them and explain her dad can't help it
