My daughter starts kindergarden in August. She is left handed, and I have been told by several people that when she starts school they will try to make her learn to use her right hand. Is this true? I think that it is perfectly fine for her to be left handed.

  1. As a teacher, I know of no one that tries to switch them.  They will push for a proper pencil grip and arm positioning.  Some of my left handed students have had very unusual styles.  This makes it more difficult to achieve good penmanship.

You will be speaking to your daughter's teacher at the start of school.  She will be doing evaluations to see what she knows and it won't hurt to mention it then.  It may even need to be mentioned again a little later in the year if you suspect that that detail may have been lost in the beginning of the year rush.

    God's best to you!

  2. I am left handed and so are both of my sisters kids (17 and 10) and they were never made to try and write with the right hand. Neither was I for that matter and I am 35. My nephews teacher once tried to tell him he could not turn his paper to write and she was adamant about it, I told my sister to go talk to that teacher, a lefty needs to turn their paper and she did. That is the only problem either of her kids have had with being left handed. Except for scissors but now most scissors are universal. Just make sure if they have community scissors etc. that he has a pair of left handed or universal at his table.

Sorry I referred to your child as a he I had my nephew on my mind, I meant at her table.

  3. I haven't heard of making a child switch in many many years.  Our school's kindergarden encourages the child to use which ever hand they prefer.. left or right.  Good luck and I hope your daughter has a fun filled school year.

  4. A lot of people are left handed in school, they might have learned right hand but then went back to left handwriting.

But no, they dont make you learn right handing.

  5. No, of course not. That's silly. Hand preference is established when your very young and no one can make you change your writing hand. Left handed people are just as accepted as righties.

  6. They shouldn't.  Every once in a while you'll find a really old-school teacher who thinks everyone should use their right hand, but not usually.  Talk to your daughter once she starts school, or just drop in one day to see how class is going.  If that is happening (and I'm thinking the chances are pretty slim that it will) make it clear to the teacher that she may NOT force your daughter to use her right hand.

  7. no, they wont, make sure her teachers know she is left handed, alot of times for the children that realyl havent picked what side they use they try right because most people are right handed, but if they know shes left handed they willl leave her be.

  8. i never heard of that before. i know alot of kids that started kindergarten left handed and they did not have to use their right hand. but the ppl are probably talking about activities in which you have to use your right hand like hand drawing or finger painting or something. if its that case, then teach her that using the right hand also can be fun as using the left hand, good luck.

  9. It's not true. They let little kids color and cut with whatever hand they want to.

  10. I don't know where you live, but in most of the world, the practice of trying to 'switch' kids went out with the model T.  It's fine to be left handed, and nobody will try to change her. (And if they do, protest vigerously -- get a doctor's note if necessary.)

  11. Good Lord, no.

This is a good example for you of dealing with busybodies.  I'm so sorry this person upset you.

  12. They used to do that a hundred years ago.  They don't do that anymore..unless of course you live in a backwards town.  On the first day, just have a chat with the teacher.

  13. Yeah starting school is so exciting my baby is starting school this September and myself being a teacher she has every right to use her left hand is the teacher says something diffrent i would have a talk with the pricapal they are not allowed to do that

  14. they will try to make her use her right hand because they feel it is easy for them to write with their right hand, this is what my school did put if she keeps on useing her left hand when at school they will soon after get the picture and let her use it. it is perfectly normal to be left-handed.. :)

  15. Thats what they did back in our parents age, they dont do that anymore.
