Dav Whatmore throws weight behind Shoaib Malik as T20 captain - Cricket News Round-up – April 05, 2012 – Part 3

After keeping a close eye on the domestic tournaments, Pakistan coach Dav Whatmore has pinpointed Sialkot Stallions captain Shoaib Malik as the most suitable candidate to lead the national T20 squad.

Sources close to the Pakistan Cricket Board confirmed that the 30-year-old was seriously being considered as the man to captain the Men In Green for the upcoming World T20 tournament to be held in September this year in Sri Lanka. Current skipper Misbah-Ul-Haq
is unlikely to be retained in the position, after he led the team to two limited-overs series defeats against England earlier this year in UAE.

Malik impressed with his recent performance as skipper of the Stallions in the recently wrapped-up Faysal Bank Super Eight T-20 Cup. In addition to leading his team to victory, he also displayed solid performances with the bat, including a vital unbeaten
62 in the final against the Karachi Dolphins on April 1.

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson is certain his team will more than step up to the challenge in their upcoming Test series against Australia, on the basis of their new-found confidence.

The Windies have a poor record against the Aussies, having won their last series against them in 1995. They have won only one out of the last 18 Tests they’ve played against the Aussies, in addition to two draws.

Their current limited-overs series against the visiting Australian squad renewed the confidence of the Caribbean team, as they were able to hold their own, and end both the ODI and T20 series on a draw.

Gibson is convinced that their recent competitive performances have instilled a fighting spirit in the team, which is likely to serve them well as they take on the tourists in a 3-match Test series, due to begin on April 7 at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown,
Barbados.

Aussie batsman Luke Pomersbach will be making a comeback to cricket for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, following a spell of depression which saw him taking a break from cricket.

He announced his intent to miss the 2011 Australian domestic season, citing health and well-being as the reasons behind his decision. He will be returning to the Royal Challenger’s squad, and has expressed excitement at the prospect of playing with players
such as Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers and Daniel Vettori. The Challengers will be playing their first match against the Delhi Daredevils on April 7.
