Former South African batsman Dave Callaghan, the first cricketer to return to the sport after battling cancer, has backed India’s Yuvraj Singh, who is poised to make a comeback after a similar struggle against the disease, claiming the ordeal will have left
the all-rounder stronger.
“Yuvraj is one of the cricketers I would pay to watch. He is very exciting to watch and I think this little setback will have given him the renewed energy to succeed for India again,” said Callaghan during an interview with
cricketnext.com. “The tough times will have made him far stronger as an individual, and with his carefree approach to the game, it could be a lethal combination. He has so much to offer Indian cricket.”
Yuvraj, whose last match for the Men in Blue was played in November last year, emerged as a hero for the national side during their successful 2011 ICC World Cup campaign, winning the Player of the Tournament award for outstanding performances with both
bat and ball.
However, throughout the period, he remained troubled by fitness concerns, suffering breathing difficulties, nausea, and frequently coughing up blood. A tumour was discovered in between his lungs during the later part of 2011, and he was diagnosed with a
rare form of germ cell cancer.
After undergoing chemotherapy treatment in the United States during the earlier part of this year, the 30-year-old returned to India in April, with the question of his return to cricket looming over his head.
Announcing his intent to play for India again, the southpaw began fitness training at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore during June this year, and his efforts yielded results as the national selectors deemed him fit enough to include him in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750’s
15-man squads for the 2-match T20I series against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758 during the later part of September this year.
While the first T20I against New Zealand, scheduled for September 8 at Visakhapatnam, was washed out due to rain, the second one approaches amid a frenzy of excitement, with Yuvraj expected to take the field at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai,
today on September 11.
