Dave Dombrowski feeling optimistic ahead of 2012 season – MLB News
Victor Martinez suffered from a serious knee injury while participating in a routine training session. Speaking to the media a few days ago, Dave Dombrowski called Martinez’s injury a sock in the gut. However, the general manager has regrouped himself now and he seems very optimistic about the whole situation.
After seeing so many Tigers’ players on the winter caravan, Dombrowski is confident of achieving the desired results even without one of his key players. Martinez, who displayed some high quality batting abilities, is likely to miss the entire season. Showing great composure and temperament, the striker helped the Tigers win the American League Championships last season.
Undoubtedly, Martinez is an integral part of the club and the Tigers are going to miss him this season. However, Dombrowski is convinced that his team has what it takes to win the World Series title this year. A club has the best chance to succeed if it is resilient and the Tigers will relying heavily on a resilient group of players.
"Not only do we have a resilient group of guys -- we have a talented group of guys who have a chance to continue to get better because they are younger in their careers,” said Dombrowski in an interview
"But I'll start -- because he's done such a fine job and been with us such a long time -- he dealt with some issues last year and came back later in the year and did great for us -- Brandon Inge. And we're also fortunate to have Donny Kelly, who did a great job for us last year at third and in the outfield," he further added.
Martinez’s absence from the batting line-up means that the Tigers will have to get his replacement as early as possible to avoid panic later on. Dombrowski has been in talks with Boesch Brennan and Alex Avila for the last few days. Brennan and Avila will have an excellent opportunity to cement their spot in the team by giving consistent performances at the available DH position.
However, it will not be easy for the Tigers to get someone as good as Martinez. Dombrowski will be looking to analyse all the options carefully before making his final decision.
