Dave Evans ecstatic after grabbing overall lead of 49er fleet: 2012 Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta
After taking part in four races and performing brilliantly in them, the British duo of Dave Evans and Ed Powys was able to make it on top of the 49er fleet with eight points. The British pair was outstanding on the opening day of the 2012 Skandia Sail for
Gold Regatta and proved their class with some classy sailing display.
Despite the fact that there was no wind in the morning to start a proper race, which made the participants wait for a while, the fleet managed to formulate the initial score board sailing in four scheduled races on the Portland Harbour and Weymouth Bay waters.
Initially the winds troubled the sailors but after some time the boats got used to the air flow and the tacticians sailed accordingly. First two races were totally dominated by the Britons as they cruised into the top podium finishes in both beats.
Meanwhile, in the third and fourth race, they failed to maintain their top position and tumbled down in the race standings with two third place podium finishes. Despite two lower scores, the Brits managed to claim the leading position with eight points without
any discarded races. Evans was quite happy with the proceedings.
Speaking to the local media, he said, “This morning’s race was great, we just kept it simple. It was one of those races when it is simple if you’re in the front but hard if you’re at the back, so we managed to get clear. We like the breeze so we are looking
forward to the rest of week. Today was a condition we are ok in, but we don’t really do that well in; so getting a good result was great for us.”
Overall standings at the conclusion of four races:
1. GBR 1294 Dave EVANS GBRDE18 Ed POWYS GBREP5 1, 1, 3, 3 = 8 Points
2. GBR 1296 Stevie MORRISON GBRSM24 Ben RHODES GBRBR3 6, 4, 4, 4 = 18 Points
3. IRL 10 Ryan SEATON IRLRS8 Matthew MCGOVERN IRLMM49 8, 11, 1, 1 = 21 Points
4. NZL 6 Marcus HANSEN NZLMH9 Josh POREBSKI NZLJP6 7, 6, 1, 7 = 21 Points
5. GBR 112 Dylan FLETCHER GBRDF15 Alain SIGN GBRAS23 2, 2, 13, 6 = 23 Points
6. FIN 280 Lauri LEHTINEN FINLL1 Kalle BASK FINKB1 7, 12, 4, 5 = 28 Points
