Dave Whelan ready to sell Wigan Athletic
Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan has revealed he is ready to sell the Premier League club so it does not become a burden for his family.
Whelan has owned the club since 1995 and helped guide them back to Premier League football in 2005. However, he admits that the time is approaching for him to move on.
"It would be unfair of me to pass the club to my grandchildren.
I have been paying in more than £100million and I can't put them in a position where they have to put money in," said Whelan to the
Daily Mirror.
This news will come as a worry to many Wigan fans because of the risks involved in the sale of any club. Whelan has structured and secured the club and there will undoubtedly
be a period of uncertainty following his departure.
Worries on the horizon
There are many worries on the horizon for the football club because at this stage anyone could come in and buy the club. Fans, officials and players like to be well informed
at all times and this is something that Whelan will have to bear in mind.
Football has been littered with examples of takeovers gone wrong in the recent past. The classic example of this is with Portsmouth where owner after owner came in and
took control of the former Premier League side before the administrators settled things down.
There will be a huge period of uncertainty once Whelan has left. This is because a new owner will come in and have fresh ideas for the club. This may take Wigan off in
an unfamiliar direction that could lead to risk or reward.
However, Whelan has to be backed to do the right thing for Wigan and himself. He has been at the club for 15 years and will care greatly about Wigan's security and future.
Betting advice
Whelan does not appear to be the sort of owner that will sell his club to just anyone. Wigan should remain a strong club long after he has departed and this means there
will be no reason to change any regular betting patterns with the team.
