Davenport/Hingis defeat Austin/Rinaldi 6-2, 6-3
Lindsay Davenport of USA and Martina Hingis of Switzerland cruised past Tracy Austin and Kathy Rinaldi of USA in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 in the ladies’ invitational doubles event at the Wimbledon Championships in London on Friday.
Davenport and Hingis thrashed Austin and Rinaldi as they allowed the Americans to win just two games, breaking them twice and winning the set 6-2. The American/Swiss team claimed 75 percent of the first service points and 63 percent
of the second service points in the first set. Davenport and Hingis hit a couple of winners and converted 52 percent of the returns into points in the opening set. The American/Swiss duo capitalised on both break point opportunities they created on the American
pair’s serve in the first set.
In the second set, Austin and Rinaldi drew the first blood as they broke Davenport and Hingis in the third game and held their serve in the next game to go ahead 3-1. After that, it was all Davenport and Hingis show as the American/Swiss
pair clinched five successive games, breaking their opponents in the sixth and eighth game to win the set 6-3. The unseeded pair converted two of the three break points they received on their opponents’ serve in the second set. The match lasted for 58 minutes.
