Davey Cathels and Jay Quinn survive Round 3 of Quiksilver Pro Portugal 2011
The surfing action continued with the ninth and tenth heat of Quiksilver Pro Portugal’s round of 24 (Round 3) at the beach-break of Ribeira D’Ilhas in Ericeira, Portugal, on Thursday afternoon, June 16th.
Australia’s Davey Cathels defeated America’s Tanner Gudauskas in the ninth heat to advance to the round of 12, while eliminating his competitor from the event title contention.
New Zealand’s Jay Quinn dominated the tenth heat to eventually walk away with the top honours and removing Northern Spain’s Hodei Collazo from the sixth Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime event of the year.
With low tides and strong winds prevailing at the primary event site, the day was not ideal for surfing. The conditions were putting both experience and skills of the surfers on test as they looked to stay alive in the competition.
Despite the conditions, Cathels managed to hold his own during the ninth heat and collect a couple of good scores to advance to the next round of the competition. His first good score came almost half-way through the heat, when he locked a wave to score
6.17 points off it. His second wave earned him a score of 7.33 to take him to a heat-total of 13.50 points.
Unlike his brother, Gudauskas failed to read the surfing conditions and ended up succumbing to them as a result. Scoring 2.00 and 3.90 points off his two waves, he finished with a disappointing score of 5.90 points to lose by a huge margin. Consequently,
hi found his title pursuit come to a premature end.
The tenth heat pitted Quinn against Collazo in a battle for survival. However, the show was stolen by the New Zealander as he came up with an exceptional performance to get one step closer to the event title.
As the heat kicked off, Quinn locked a good wave that came his way to throw down a string of spectacular tricks, earning 8.60 points off it. The Spanish responded with a 7.53-point wave to reduce the lead and rid himself of pressure to some extent.
Collazo soon added an additional 6.70 to his account to move to a heat-total of 14.23 points. Quinn required less than 5.00 points off his second wave to clinch the lead. Searching for the required score, he ended up collecting a near-perfect score of 9.50
off his second wave to finish with a heat-total of 18.10 points, removing his competitor from the title contention.
