Davey Johnson officially announced as skipper of Washington Nationals for 2013 – MLB News
After a prolonged process of negotiations, Washington Nationals have declared that Davey Johnson will remain a part of the team until 2013. Beyond the next season, Johnson will just act as special advisor to General Manager Mike Rizzo.
If the performance of the Nationals under Johnson is considered, he deserves being retained for another season. By the dint of his inspirational leadership, he made players perform at their potential during the season.
He rightly utilised the resources and produced favourable results.
The role of Johnson in taking the team into playoffs has been instrumental. He did not let the players grow complacent at any stage of the season.
While Washington piled on wins, it was expected that the team which has posted poor records in the last couple of years might not tackle the sentiments of being a playoff calibre unit.
Johnson was aware of the possibility that his team may experience decline by taking unnecessary amount of pressure as the post-season approached.
Keeping this factor in mind, he changed the mindset of the players and made them feel that they have yet to go a long way to earn the glory.
As far as the upcoming season is concerned, Johnson is h**l-bent to achieve what has not been attainted in 2012.
Commenting on the confirmation by the Nationals about his job as manager, Johnson has stated that he was not concerned when the decision from the team management was pending.
After being named as skipper officially, the most important task for Johnson is to plan preparations during Spring Training and make sure he builds a strong unit for the upcoming season.
“We need to do something things better and go further,” Johnson said. “There are still a lot of very important decisions to make in the spring and over the winter. I like where we’re at. Rizzo is going to be doing some things to make us stronger. I like
all the guys that we have and all the insurances that we’ve got.”
Johnson will be aware of the challenges ahead.
Teams that perform well in previous season do not necessarily follow up with the same level of dominance in the upcoming one.
Johnson will look to ascertain that the Nationals improve next year and once again win a spot in the playoffs.
