Davey Johnson terms Andrew McCutchen as “awfully comfortable” against Jordan Zimmermann-MLB Update
Jordan Zimmermann was made helpless by Andrew McCutchen, who fetched two home runs from his pitches. Starter who is among the best pitchers with the Washington Nationals was being sent for big hits in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
A wide pitching repertoire Zimmermann boasts was rendered useless as whatever variety he threw at him met a fierce reprisal.
The ease with which McCutchen handled pitches can easily make one think that it was more his supernatural display on the plate than poor throws that caused Zimmermann to struggle on the mound.
Throwing fastballs and getting strike-outs as a result has been one of the easiest ways for Zimmermann to send batters packing. As he tried to do the same against him, he was punished right away, much to the detriment of his confidence.
Afterwards, he lost his path and throws which he aimed for certain location reached an unintended spot around the strike-zone. In turn, an awful comfort shown by McCutchen, as the manager Davey Johnson put it, kept drawing runs from Zimmermann.
After experiencing his worst outing of the season, Jordan will be low on confidence. However, he is lucky that team-mates are backing up and envisaging a huge role from him in the season.
Third baseman, Ryan Zimmerman, far from terming Jordan as mediocre believes that every pitcher has a bad day and writing one off based on a single outing is unreasonable.
Quoting Stephen Strasburg who is the best pitcher in the National League, if last one and half month’s performance is anything to go by, Ryan said, he also had a rough time the other day.
“Jordan’s going to be great,” Zimmerman said. “Just like Stephen [Strasburg], he’s not going to pitch great every single time — it’s impossible to do that. But if they can go six [innings] and give up four [runs] and that’s a bad start — I think we’ll take
that.”
In the face of pressure, Jordan explained, it became difficult for him to reign on his throws.
“It’s just one of those things where I was getting a little too quick to home plate and my arm wasn’t able to catch up,” Jordan said.
Jordan will take McCutchen as an exception and will look forward to see his fastballs wreaking the kind of impact he wants ahead in the season.
