Davey Johnson thankful of Mike Rizzo as he claims Sporting News Manager of the Year Award-MLB News
Commenting on his declaration as Sporting News Manager of the Year from National League, Davey Johnson has paid special thanks to Washington Nationals’ General Manager Mike Rizzo. He is grateful to him for putting faith in his abilities.
Johnson has been rewarded now after he spent the whole year with the Nationals in helping them become a force to reckon with.
He carried out his duties as skipper effectively. He rightly made sure that the talented players on the Nationals’ roster actually unleash their excellence on the field.
By producing desired results from individual players, he aided the Nationals in putting up amazing performances collectively.
Even before the start of the season, the experts maintained that Johnson can change the fate of the Nationals.
While considered as a mediocre club in general, it was being predicted that they will improve enormously with Johnson at the helm of affairs.
Johnson lived up to the hype as the Nationals qualified for the post-season. If it was not for the ninth inning meltdown by their reliever Drew Storen in Game 5 of the National League Division Series against St. Louis Cardinals, he may have taken the club
to a World Series win.
Johnson believes his success is the result of the immense support he receives from the club and in particular from Rizzo. Johnson has taken the opportunity to heap praise on the talented players sitting in the Nationals’ roster.
"To be recognized by my fellow comrades, a particularly accomplished bunch, makes this award especially meaningful. I send my thanks to them and the folks at Sporting News, as well as the Lerner family and Mike Rizzo for giving me the opportunity to manage
such a special, talented group of men. To put on the uniform every day and compete is an honor I never take for granted," Johnson said while issuing a statement of gratitude.
As far as the possibility of Johnson being named as manager for one more season is concerned, the Nationals have not made an announcement yet.
Johnson will be looking forward to leading the same team next year. It will be interesting to see how well he can organise the team and re-group during the offseason as they get ready for Spring Training in a couple of months.
