The Bavarian midfielder is ecstatic after his team’s triumph over Olympique Marseille in the quarter-final of the UEFA Champions League.
Bayern Munich progressed to the semi-final of Europe’s premier club competition on Tuesday night after they downed Marseille 2-0 at the Allianz Arena in the second-leg. The home side dominated the proceedings throughout the course
of the game and emerged worthy winners in the end.
Alaba claimed that his side truly deserved to go through after the displays in both legs. He insisted that Bayern were certainly the better team in the fixture and is excited on playing the semi-final.
The defender has been praised for putting in some excellent performances in the left-back position in the last few weeks and admitted that he has developed a great understanding with Franck Ribery on the left side. He hailed the
manager and the coaching staff for providing him with the opportunity to play in the first team.
“We were the better team for the full 90 minutes. We've won and we’re through. I've struck up a good understanding with Ribery, and I hope it carries on. I want to thank the coaching staff and the team for their 100 percent support,”
he was quoted as saying in an interview.
On the other hand, Marseille manager Didier Deschamps admitted that Bayern deserved to win the fixture as they certainly played great football. He insisted that it was a sensational experience to play against a great side in the
quarter-final of the Champions League and added that his players will relish the experience.
“This hurdle was definitely too high. We knew it would be difficult after our dismal performance at home, but it's still been a terrific adventure and we've played magnificently. It was a privilege to play such a great team in
such a great stadium,” he concluded.
Bayern Munich will take on FC Augsburg in the league at the weekend and will be looking to further reduce the lead on Borussia Dortmund at the top of the table. The side has been in sensational form in the last few weeks and have
also reached the final of the DFB-Pokal.
