David Beckham has become the latest English footballer to be honoured with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards gala. It was a special moment for Beckham as he received the award in front of his peers
in London.
David Beckham began his career at Manchester United, and after humble beginnings the right-sided midfielder made himself an integral part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s 1999 treble winning squad. However the long standing Manchester United manager and David Beckham
fell out over the course of the 2002-03 season, as Manchester United eventually parted ways with the former England captain. Beckham then made the move to another big European club, Real Madrid.
At Real Beckham achieved immediate success, as he led his new club to the Spanish La Liga title in 2006-07, their first in three years. David then left the Spanish giants on a high in early 2007; as he went on to join the LA galaxy in the Major League Soccer
competition in the US. Beckham still plays for the Galaxy, but he also plays an important role for English football as an ambassador, and a role model to millions of children around the world.
Beckham said that he was humbled upon receiving the lifetime achievement award in the presence of his peers. The former Manchester United star was quite teary eyed when he was called up to the stage to receive the award. David received the trophy from Manchester
United legend, Sir Bobby Charlton. Not only that, the midfielder also received a two-minute standing ovation, which was seen as a mark of respect for his services to English football.

Beckham further added, "I'm really humbled to receive an award for something I have always loved and continue
to love doing. Football is a team game and without the team and the players' support and skill I wouldn't be here today.”

He said, "He's the best manager in football; I regard him as a father figure." The 35-year-old
concluded by stating, “To receive an award like this now... while it's great to receive a lifetime achievement award at 35 and obviously be still playing, I'm not finished yet.”
