David Beckham to recieve Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Sports awards
There is no doubt about the fact that David Beckham is the most famous footballer of our generation and though he may not be the most talented or skillful or be playing in any of the world’s top league but he still remains a darling
of the media.
The former Captain of England is now all set to add another feather to his already fascinating list of achievements after it was announced yesterday, that the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder will be receiving
the BBC Sports Personality Lifetime Achievement award in a posh ceremony on Sunday.
The 35 year old is no stranger to anyone and England’s most capped outfield player and a winner of six Premier League crowns and a Champions League medal with Manchester United is all set to win another prestigious accolade.
Beckham has won the league in every country that he has played in apart from his current country of stay, the United States, where he is yet to claim the MLS winners medal but that is a mere blemish on a glittering career that
is littered with astonishing achievements.
Beckham has won the Spanish Premiera Liga with Real Madrid after he moved to the Spanish Capital for a sum of 25 million pounds from Manchester United and has also spent two loan seasons with Italian giants AC Milan in his career.
In 2001, ‘Golden Balls’ was the name the BBC Sports personality of the year and now will go one better with a life time achievement award.
The lifetime achievement award is one of the many awards that will be presented on Sunday and the LA Galaxy midfielder will be ecstatic with the news.
The editor of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards, Carl Doran has said that David fully deserves this award as his record on and off the pitch has been phenomenal over the years and there is no one else who deserves the
accolade more than him this year.
Beckham has also won the main award 9 years ago when he was crowned the BBC sports Personality of the Year in 2001 after his glittering performances for England and Manchester United but it was his performance in the qualifying
campaign for the World Cup that earned him global recognition after his sublime and perhaps, most famous free kick in the game against Greece, earning England a spot in the 2002 World Cup finals.
Beckham started his England career 14 years ago in 1996 against Moldova in a friendly and his last game against Belarus in October 2009, saw him become the most capped outfield player for the three lions with 115 caps. During that
period he also captained the national side on 59 occasions and stepped down after a dismal performance by his side in the 2002 World Cup.
Having appeared in three World Cups prior to the last one in South Africa, Beckham was all set to make his appearance in world football’s biggest extravaganza but he suffered a major setback when he ruptured his Achilles tendon
playing for AC Milan, that cost him a place in the national side.
Beckham’s most memorable year was in 1999 when he helped Manchester United win an unprecedented treble of trophies with the Premier League, FA Cup and the Champions League.
It was his two corners that led to two late goals in the final against Bayern Munich in Barcelona’s Camp Nou that earned Manchester United one of the most famous wins in the history of the Champions League, as never before or never
after has a team ever won the Champions League after trailing by a goal in the 90 minutes, to turn around a tie during injury time.
