England midfielder, David Bentley has made his move from Tottenham to Birmingham. The midfielder was short on first team chances in London and will spend the rest of the season on loan.
Bentley is expected to go straight into the starting line up for Birmingham, for the all important game against Aston Villa on Sunday.
As a teenager, Bentley was tagged to be the next Beckham for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749. He made the move from Blackburn to Tottenham, seeking greener pastures, however, the move turned out to be not a very lucrative one for his career. In the two and a half seasons he spent
with the Spurs, he made 62 appearances, but most of them came from the bench, and the right footer only managed to get 5 goals during his time in London.
Bentley said, "It has been a difficult time for me, the last couple of years. I found it hard not being involved as much as I wanted, at Tottenham".
Tottenham signed Bentley for a sum of 15 million pounds in 2008, and would be expected to lose money when they decide to sell him off.
Bentley said that the Spurs have some amazing players in the team, and he found it really hard to get a chance on the field due to this. He added, though, that he had no problems with the manager on a personal level, and things remain healthy between him
and Harry Redknapp.
Harry Redknapp wished Bentley all the best for his loan period at Birmingham and said that he had always believed in the winger, but, due to the size of the squad, he had not been able to accommodate the talented midfielder. Redknapp said that it is always
healthy for a player to spend some time away on loan if he is not getting enough game time. He added that he expects Bentley to come back as a much improved player, and did not rule out the chance of him becoming a first team regular at the Spurs. Redknapp
went on to say that David is one player who was probably struggling under the weight of too much expectation too early, and that may be the reason his form gave away, however, some regular football may revive him.
Meanwhile, Bentley's new boss, Alex McLeish has sent out a challenge to him, asking him to prove his abilities on the pitch for Birmingham.
McLeish said that Bentley had an abundance of talent, but he has not been able to convert that into performances lately. He added that he wanted the old Bentley in his team, who made his name in Blackburn and got into the England national team. McLeish said
that it is time for Bentley to make his boots do the talking.
