David Byrne off to a sloppy start in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans - Golf News
David Byrne got off to a sloppy start in his Zurich Classic of New Orleans campaign, as he carded a six-over par 78 in the opening round to share the 151st spot on the leaderboard.
He started his round on the back nine of the course and made a double bogey on the very first hole that he played.
Another bogey on the par-four 14th hole took him to a two-over par through the back nine. He displayed a similar performance on the front nine, as he carded three bogeys to finish the round on a low note.
“Mentally, I felt good but my body, I was making tentative swings,” he said. “I made two bad bogies at No. 2 and 3 and that was a momentum killer. Then I had another bad bogey at No. 6”.
He is currently 13 strokes off the lead set by Ken Duke and Cameron Tringale at a seven-under par 65.
Despite the poor performance on Thursday, he still had three players listed behind him, on the leaderboard.
Robert Karlsson carded a seven-over par to take the 154th place. On the other hand, Scott Stallings and Kyle Thompson were tied for the 155th position, the last on the leaderboard, after carding an eight-over par 80 each.
“I felt good,” Byrne said. “I didn’t obviously play as well as I’d hoped. I got off to a poor start”.
Byrne failed to make a single birdie throughout the first round. When he was asked about the reason why he failed in making one, he humorously replied, “Clearly I’m saving them all up for (today)”.
He is now focusing on improving his performance in the second round in order to make the cut. “My goal now is to make the cut and I’ll have to play one of the better rounds I’ve ever played,” he said.
By and large, the course witnessed him struggling with his putting, as he missed several putts, which would have earned him a better score on the leaderboard.
While playing the 17th hole, he had a chance to make an easy birdie putt. However, his technique did not help him and he settled for a par shot.
“I was a little bit off with my reads,” he said. “It was kind of one of those days on the greens”.
