David Cameron sides with Dow but wants India in London 2012 Olympic Games as well
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Cameron, has recently made a statement in which he has asserted his support with the Dow Chemical Company by stating that upcoming London 2012 Olympic Games will not be ending its partnership with the company
during this year.
Having said that, the Prime Minister also added that he would feel ‘very sad’ in the event that India does not send its delegation to the London 2012 Olympic Games because of the partnership with Dow.
There was been a huge outcry from the Indian quarters as well as some human rights group on having Dow Chemical as a sponsor for the London 2012 Olympic Games. This is because the company is associated with one of the worst industrial disasters that took
place in Bhopal, India.
A gas leak took place in a Union Carbide Corporation factory that is now owned by Dow Chemical. The leak caused the death of thousands of local residents and the effects of the gas continued to haunt the survivors as children born to the locals of Bhopal
had birth defects.
Dow Chemical had been asked by the Indian government as well as the local residents of Bhopal to pay a monetary compensation for the incident.
However, the amount paid by the Dow Chemical was not deemed to be enough by the receiving parties for which an end of the Dow partnership is being called for.
The UK Prime Minister David Cameron, expressed himself on the matter in the following manner, “I am wanting to see the Olympics not used for industrial or political or other purposes... That I cannot see a problem with the IOC being sponsored by Dow. I think
it followed perfectly reasonable processes. Therefore, I cannot complain about Dow sponsoring the London Olympics.”
Dow Chemical is one of the key sponsors of the London 2012 Olympics which are scheduled to begin from July 27 and will be providing the London Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games with a giant wrap for the main Olympic venue, the Olympic Park. The
wrap will be having the logo of Dow Chemical.
