David Campese wants the England job – Rugby News Update
David Campese, the former Australian fullback and wing player has declared an interest in teaming up with Stuart Lancaster, as part of the England rugby management team.
Speaking to The Times ahead of his availability, he said, "This isn't a joke," and due to him riling up the English players as part of the Wallabies team he knows that people will think he is joking but he assured by saying, "People will say, 'Oh,
there's Campo sounding off again.' But that's not the case.”
England is currently in need of a backs coach for their trip to South Africa in June, where they play a three-match test series along with two other games. Many names are being touted and it is thought that Mike Catt will be given a temporary role with the
team, but the English head coach, Stuart Lancaster is desperate for Wayne Smith, the former All Blacks player and coach to join the staff. Currently he is being tipped as the favourite to take the position on a long term basis.
However, Campese who won 101 test caps for Australia is adamant that he is the man for the job. He said, "I would love to help out if they were interested in talking to me. I think I could bring something, even if it was only in a consultancy or advisory
role. I know Brad Barritt well from his time with the Sharks and he knows what I can do."
David Campese is one of the legends of the sport and no player had the ability to divide analysts and fans alike as he did. His international career spanned 14 years from 1982 to 1996. Making his debut against arch rivals New Zealand at Christchurch, on
August 14, 1982; he played his last match for the Wallabies against Wales at Cardiff, on December 1, 1996.
Since his retirement from the sport he has taken up various coaching stints. Firstly with the Natal Sharks, and then he was the coach of the Tongan Sevens team. It is unlikely that Campese will get a position with the English team but desperate times call
for desperate measures.
