Question:

David Copperfield test?

I am trying to prepare for the test as best as I can...and a little guidance from the Yahoo! community would be awesome.

The prompts are:

1) It can be argued that David is often victimized because he is attracted to appearance and is unable to see the reality lying below the surface. You should be able to argue the point, supplying specific evidence from the novel to support your argument.

2) "...I hope that simple love and truth will be stronger in the end. I hope that real love and truth are stronger in the end than any evil or misfortune in the world." So says Agnes Wickfield in Chapter XXXV. You should be able to identify the value bearers in the novel; that is the characters who represent "real love and truth" and how they triumph "in the end". Also, you should be able to identify those "evil" characters in the novel, as well as the "misfortune(s)" that plague certain characters.

Once I step in the classroom, I will receive one of these. So I need to be prepared for both. I can use post-it notes.

Please do whatever you can. Thanks a lot!

  1. 1) David made a choice to marry someone who instantly attracted him because she was childlike and beautiful but he did not see past appearences, she had his love as long as she lived but he was not able to be trulycontent and happy because she was so childlike that she was not able to take on adult responsibilities.

    2) Agnes knew David when he was young and was his best friend growing up. She was always in love with him but he never thought of her as anything more than a substitute sister. She stayed his friend even when he grew up and married a woman he had just met and instantly fell in love with (Dora), after Dora died she was his strength to get through. He finally discovered her love for him and realized that he loved her too. his love for her was simpler and stronger, her was able to talk with and trust her completely. She was a woman able to be responsible and raise children and love every part of him as Dora could not since she never moved beyond adorable innocence. But even though he was more content with Agnes than he had ever been with Dora, he always missed that lost love, the passion and romance he had experienced with Dora. Sorry I don't remember the evil characters, I read the novel fifteen years ago.
