David Coulthard rates Kimi Raikkonen as an ideal choice for Red Bull - Formula 1 news
Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard believes that Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus will be a perfect choice for Red Bull in case the team needs a replacement for Mark
Webber, who might call it a day on his career by the end of the 2013 season.
According to some unconfirmed reports, there is an indication that Webber has decided to leave Formula 1 for good, especially after he has been unable to get the
support of the team for the past many years.
The Australian driver has been racing alongside Sebastian Vettel for quite some time, but has been unable to outperform him consistently. Due to this, there has
been a lot of criticism on him from all over the world.
However, the veteran driver has not been getting full support from the team, which has resulted in problems for him over the years. In 2010, he was in a strong
position to win the Drivers’ Championship, but lacked backing from his team-mate and rest of the management, which cost him a chance to succeed.
From then onwards, Vettel has gained immense confidence and has won three back-to-back titles with Red Bull. However, he will need a supportive partner, if Webber
decides to quit racing.
According to Coulthard, “If Mark decides to do something else, in my view Kimi would be the perfect team-mate for Sebastian.”
His words were echoed by Formula 1 pundit Gary Anderson, who claimed, “I believe he [Raikkonen] is a perfect fit for Red Bull. I wouldn't be surprised if negotiations
were well down the road for this to happen.”
However, the Lotus driver has not yet confirmed his plans for the 2014 season. He is currently doing really well and is fighting Vettel for the championship. Despite
that, he has not ruled out making a switch to another team next year.
The Finn stated, “I don't have a contract [after 2013], but at some point I have to think about it. I want to win, and at least for the moment, I want to be here
[at Lotus].”
Both Raikkonen and Vettel are close friends, thus their partnership could be positive for Red Bull. However, things will be different when they go on track against
each other in the same team.
