David Coulthard sympathises with Hamilton, says he did not do anything intentionally – Formula 1
Former Formula 1 racing driver David Coulthard has voiced in favour of his fellow British driver Lewis Hamilton of the McLaren-Mercedes team.
David said whatever Hamilton did in the Monaco Grand Prix with the drivers and then in the media with his ‘Ali G’ comments was not a wise thing to do but then it was all unintentional.
Coulthard said that right from the free practice session, Hamilton was on the down side of advantage and had less time to feel the track when a few crashes occurred. He added that in the race afterwards, the Brit was constantly fighting with the slower and
back runners which was frustrating for him.
“Of course, what Lewis said was not 'off-the-record'. My feeling is that he should not be vilified for speaking his mind. Lewis made a mistake, yes; he knows that what he said overstepped the mark, I don't believe he meant it seriously,” commented Coulthard.
He further added that, “Lewis may be hauled over the coals for giving his opinion, but at least he was honest. When he gave that interview, he had seen the race only through the prism of his race helmet.”
Coulthard simplified the situation and stated that right from the start to the weekend, the Brit was unlucky.
In the Monaco Grand Prix qualifiers, Hamilton’s flying lap was compromised when Sauber’s Sergio Perez had an accident and the session was stopped.
After that, the track temperature was compromised and Hamilton was unable to post a better time than his previous ones.
Then in the race, the Brit was in constant struggle to make it to the top three drivers of the grid and grab some useful points against Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel.
Coulthard stated that Hamilton certainly did wrong but this is what he is made of and will not change just after a bad weekend.
Nevertheless, now the Canadian Grand Prix waits next in line of the 2011 Formula 1 season on June 12 and certainly, Hamilton will need every possible point to challenge the monopoly of Sebastian Vettel on the drivers’ championship table.
