David Davies not to participate in FINA World Championships – Swimming news
David Davies of Great Britain has decided not to take part in the upcoming FINA World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
Davies took the decision after doctor’s advice and is expected to be out of competitive swimming for almost five to six weeks.
The Welsh swimmer commented on his decision and said, “It has been a relapse of what I struggled with last year and I don’t think I ever really recovered from it. I pushed myself hard to try to get to Europeans and Commonwealths but hadn’t properly got out of the fatigue.”
He further told that the situation been an annoying phase for his career, but he deems that it is the suitable option for him to prepare himself for the longer version in the sport. Davies added that missing the World Championship does not mean that he has lost his swimming career, as the break will certainly give him time to prepare well for future events.
While speaking about the break in competitive swimming, Davies said, “Having a break now will give me more time to prepare for London. A home Games has always been a motivation for me and it has been a rollercoaster ride to get towards it but I want the break now so I can get ready for Olympic Trials.”
British Swimming head coach, Dennis Pursley, said that they have discussed this issue with Davies and the situation revealed that his performance will not help British Swimming win any major title at the World Championships.
Pursley further added that Davies really needs a long break for at least six months. He deemed that it is better to give the athlete ample amount of time for upcoming events in competitive swimming.
Davies’ ultimate goal is to clinch his first ever Olympic gold in the London 2012 Olympic Games.
The distance swimmer added that he is enthused to get substantial knowledge and experience, both at the junior and senior levels. Davies wants to get back on track and thinks that he can work like a teacher to assist junior level swimmers in international competitions.
