David DeJesus sparks as Oakland Athletics break Detroit Tigers’ winning streak 6-1
It took a well organised team roster to break the Detroit Tigers’ 12-game winning on Thursday, September 15 as the Oakland Athletics beat the Tigers 6-1 at Oakland Coliseum in Oakland.
An early inning blitz powered by David DeJesus and a good mound outing from Brandon McCarthy is all it took to gain that feat. The Tigers lost to the A’s in an exciting hard fought battle.
The A’s were coming from two successive defeats and it looked like the experts had written the encounter in favour of the Tigers. However that popular assessment came under fire early on as Oakland pulled out three runs in the first. Max Scherzer did not
have the best of nights on the mound and he paid a dear price for his folly.
The star was the only man to concede runs in the game against Oakland and it took him five innings to get the call back to the dugout. He allowed five runs from seven hits and a walk. He however did pick up eight strike-outs in the game. His earned runs
average climbed to 4.39 but he still has a good winning average. Scherzer is 14-9, so far in the season.
McCarthy, on the other hand, was brilliant on the mound. The rising hurler impressed the fans at home as he went 9-8 in seven innings. He lowered his earned runs average to 3.35 when he allowed just one run off five hits and two walks. He also picked up
eight strike-outs in the encounter.
The scoring trail was lit on fire in the first when Oakland produced a three-run homer from David DeJesus. Coco Crisp began the bid for a run when he singled to first. Cliff Pennington was forced out on first but that moved Crisp to second. Josh Willingham
soon joined his friend on the diamond when he walked to first.
DeJesus came in to smash a howling homer to right centre-field. The play produced an instant 3-0 score line. The Tigers were unable to respond and that meant the A’s had the upper hand. Kurt Suzuki came in next in the second and he made it 4-0 with a fly
ball homer shot to left centre-field. With an early setback, it seemed like manager Jim Leyland was going to be under pressure.
Tigers did reply in the third as Delmon Young hit a homer to the left that opened the club’s scoring card. Detroit was desperately in search of their 13th straight win, but Thursday proved to be Oakland’s day.
Pennington was back on the score board in the bottom of the fifth. He smashed a solo home-run to right centre-field. His knock brought the A’s to a 5-1 standing in the game. Detroit fans still wondered if their team would be able to pull off a win but that
hope lost strength in the bottom of the eighth when Brandon Allen scored off a double from Crisp.
The match ended 6-1 for Oakland as Andrew Bailey ripped through the Tigers’ line-up without any significant trouble. The Athletics played hard and put in a tremendous effort as they snapped the Tigers streak. Detroit was simply outplayed in every aspect
of the game and will be looking to improve their performance before the end of the regular season.
