David DeJesus steals the show as Athletics beat Indians 3-1
Two homers from David DeJesus proved enough for the Oakland Athletics to break the Cleveland Indians’ winning streak, beating them 3-1 in the second game of the three-game series held at Overstock.com Coliseum on Wednesday. The series is tied at 1-1 as Athletics
lost the first game of the series by 4-1, on Tuesday.
Indians’ batters managed to have three more hits than those of Athletics, but weren’t able to convert good starts into runs. They had a great chance to take the lead in the third innings when the score was tied at 1-1. Carlos Santana was covering the third
base while Travis Hafner was at first base when Orlando Cabrera came on to the base plate. Cabrera mis-hit the pitch though, and got Hafner out at the second base to finish a promising innings. Meanwhile, the Indians couldn’t score a run again in the eighth
inning, despite managing two hits.
Josh Tomlin started the pitching proceedings for the Indians and was outstanding apart from conceding two homers from DeJesus. He allowed only three hits in his 7.2 innings; unfortunately two of his three hits went for the homers. This was Tomlin’s first
loss of the season and he is 4-1 after this loss with an impressive 2.43 ERA. Tony Sipp who replaced Tomlin, couldn’t get the third batter out and gave one RBI hit.
For Athletics, Trevor Cahill opened the pitching and was impressive as he gave only one run on five hits, in his seven innings. He walked three and struck out five Cleveland batters. With this win, Cahill maintained his 100 percent winning record, and is
5-0 now with 1.79 ERA. David Purcey and Brad Ziegler combined to pitch a scoreless eighth inning, while Grant Balfour earned his first save of the season with a one-walk ninth inning.
