David Ferrer, Janko Tipsarevic through to the quarter-finals – Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2012
David Ferrer beats Albert Montanes 6-0, 6-2
Third seed, David Ferrer of Spain, did not show any respite to his compatriot, Albert Montanes, crushing the world number 69 in straight sets in the round of 16 at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on Thursday. Ranked sixth in the
world, Ferrer allowed his lower ranked opponent to claim just two games in the entire match, winning it 6-0, 6-2 in just an hour and 20 minutes.
Ferrer was near flawless in the first set, as he did not lose even a single game, breaking Montanes three times to capture it 6-0.
Playing in his native city, Barcelona, Montanes responded to the crowd’s support and created a couple break opportunities on Ferrer’s opening serve of the second set but the latter succeeded in saving both of them. Montanes managed
to open his account by holding his serve in the following game, levelling the score at 1-1. However, Ferrer did not allow his compatriot to gain momentum, grabbing five of the next six games and clinching it 6-2.
The 30-year-old, Ferrer, banged in three aces and captured 20 of the 30 points on the first serves in the match. The Spaniard also secured 11 of the 16 points on the second returns.
Ferrer will lock horns with another countryman, Feliciano Lopez, in the quarter-final.
Janko Tipsarevic defeats Frederico Gil 6-2, 6-2
Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic, who is seeded fifth at the event, routed Frederico Gil of Portugal in twin sets 6-2, 6-2 to move to the quarter-finals.
The Serbian bagged initial breakthrough in the third game of the opening set and won his next serve to build a 3-1 lead. He allowed Gil to win only one more, sealing it 6-2.
Tipsarevic made an ideal start in the second set, as he pocketed first four games to move ahead 4-0. The right-hander did not let away the advantage and served it out at 5-2.
The Serbian bombarded Gil with a total of nine aces and snatched 18 of the 22 points on the first deliveries in the match. Tipsarevic won the contest in just an hour and nine minutes.
The world number eight is pitted against defending champion, Rafael Nadal, in the next match.
Telling about his strategy for the next match, the Serbian said, “It may sound stupid but against players like him, you have to go for victory. If you look for a fight, you’ve already lost. Rafa is playing like he always does on
clay, the best, but I’ll go out there looking to win and see what happens.”
Tipsarevic has lost both of the previous two matches against the King of Clay.
