David Ferrer, Milos Raonic cruise to the third round of Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell
David Ferrer defeats Carlos Berlocq 6-2, 6-2
World number 6 David Ferrer of Spain breezed past world number 72 Carlos Berlocq of Argentina in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 in the second round at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on Wednesday. It took the Spaniard just one hour and
30 minutes to undo his opponent.
Ferrer broke Berlocq twice in the opening set, winning it 6-2. The Spaniard hit one ace and the same number of double fault in the first set. The 29-year-old hit 60 percent of the first serves, winning 67 percent of the points
on them in the opening set. Ferrer won two of the four break points he received in the first set. The Spaniard saved both break points he faced in the opening set.
The proceedings in the second set were not much different from the first set as Ferrer broke the Argentinean in the fifth and seventh game to clinch the set 6-2. The Spaniard improved his first serve percentage as he fired 74 percent
of the first serves in the second set. The right-handed capitalized on two of three break point opportunities and saved both break points in the second set.
Ferrer will take on world number 66 Victor Hanescu in the third round.
Milos Raonic beats Simon Greul 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5)
World number 28 Milos Raonic of Canada rallied past his German opponent Simon Greul, ranked 125th in the world, in three thrilling sets 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5) to reach the third round.
The Canadian broke Greul in the third game of the first set and held his serve in the next game, taking a 3-1 lead. Raonic broke again in the ninth game to claim the opening set 6-3. The right-handed hit some explosive serves,
firing six aces in the first set. The Canadian won a whopping 92 percent of the points on his first serve in the opening set.
Greul fought back in the second set, breaking Raonic in the tenth game to win the set 6-4. The Argentinean hit three aces and 69 percent of the first serves in the second set.
In the deciding set, none of the two players was able to break other’s serve and took it to a tie-break. Raonic claimed one mini-break in the tie-break, winning it 7-5. The match lasted for two hours and 19 minutes.
After this hard fought second round match, Raonic said, “I’m happy to have another chance to play better tomorrow. I’m looking forward to getting recovered and getting prepared for tomorrow. It’s going to be a good match. It’s
going to be tough. He’s been playing well, so I look forward to a challenge and opportunity.”
The Canadian is slated to face Croatian Ivan Dodig, ranked 56th in the world, in the next round.
