David Ferrer: “Reaching the fourth rank in ATP doesn’t make a difference” – Tennis News
World number five, David Ferrer, was present at the 90th anniversary of the Hercules foundation that was hosted at the Alicante’s Rico Perez Stadium. He was questioned by the local media reporters about the feeling of
closing on to the fourth spot in the world rankings. Everyone was expecting a very exciting reply from the 30-year-old Spaniard but Ferrer left the media representatives shocked with his thought process.
He stated, “Be fourth, fifth or sixth, is something that gives me equal.” He reminded everyone in the hall that it is nothing new for him as he has already clinched the fourth spot in the world rankings in 2008 so returning back
to the same spot “does nothing”. Moreover, the Spanish professional stated that if he still clubbed the fourth rank in the Association of Tennis Professionals by the start of the new season and stayed there for three to four weeks would do nothing to him.
Ferrer believes that it would be unrealistic to place him above the compatriot, Rafael Nadal, who has missed the latter half of the 2012 season due to a sore knee. He added, “It would not be on its own merits because Nadal has
been stopped half a year.” The latest season for the Spaniard has been fantastic overall. He won seven titles in the entire year including the maiden Masters trophy at Paris. It was a special feeling for the 30-year-old Spaniard who unfortunately hasn’t been
able to clinch a Grand Slam title in his entire career.
He is hoping to repeat a similar performance in 2013. Ferrer stated about his New Year resolution to be “Registering a similar season is difficult, but I always try to improve my tennis.” He added, “Addressing the first stretch
of the season well and not having injuries” is his main goal for the next year. He has entered the third decade of his life and tennis players usually lose a lot of stamina when they touch the unforgiving figure of 30 years. However, the Spaniard looks magnificently
built and running across the court with the same speed.
