David Ferrer – Spanish Player of the Year: Tennis Special
Tennis star, David Ferrer, is named as Spanish Player of the Year by Association of Spanish Tennis Writers (APT) on Sunday. This was veteran’s second award with his first coming six years ago.
The Spanish number two displayed spectacular tennis skills throughout the season, which saw him grabbing seven year-to-date ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour titles. He also played a vital role in taking Spain to the Davis Cup World Group Finals. As a result, the Association of Spanish Tennis Writers awarded the Spanish Player of the year award to Ferrer. He has now levelled with his compatriot, Rafael Nadal, with bagging Spanish Player of the Year awards twice.
The 30-year-old was quoted in a press conference after receiving the award:
“This season has been the best of my career and I will never forget it for many reasons. It was a shame to lose the Davis Cup final, but when you fight as hard as you can and accept you can’t do any more, the defeats are less painful; we could not have given any more.”
Ranked fifth in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Ferrer made a thunderous start at this season’s campaign. He cruised past his rivals and conquered the Heineken Open in Auckland, first ATP event of the year.
After making a quarter-final showing at the Australian Open (lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic), the Spaniard unleashed another flurry of winners and captured his second title at the Copa Claro in Buenos Aires (overpowered his second seeded compatriot Nicolas Almagro). He maintained his intensity at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco. Ferrer breezed past his rivals without losing a set and ultimately grabbed his third year-to-date title (triumphed over eighth seeded Fernando Verdasco with a breadstick in final round.
In the clay court season, Ferrer secured a final berth at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell (lost to his top compatriot Rafael Nadal). Spicing it further, Ferrer eased past his opponents and reached final four at the French Open.
Ferrer displayed his class in the grass court season as he captured a title at the UNICEF Open. He then conquered the Skistar Swedish Open and reached last four at the US Open, final of the four Grand Slam events.
His impressive run did not end there as the Spaniard conquered the Valencia Open 500 and claimed his first Masters 1000 crown at the BNP Paribas Masters.
