David Ferrer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga through to quarters – French Open 2013
Spanish number two, David Ferrer, and the local top ranked star, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, progressed into the quarter-finals at the Roland Garros 2013 on Sunday. Ferrer crushed the 23rd seed, Kevin Anderson, with double breadsticks,
whereas the Frenchman recorded a straight set victory against Viktor Troicki at this second of the four Grand Slam events taking place in Paris, France.
Seeded fourth in this event, Ferrer displayed his true potential at the Stade Roland Garros. He required one hour and 45 minutes to jolt down a 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 victory against the South African number one. As a result he stayed on
course to make his first Grand Slam title-round appearance.
"I'm very happy with my game today," said the Spanish veteran in a courtside interview after bagging the match. "Maybe I played the best match of this week. I am in the second week of the Grand Slam, and now I want to rest and
to be focused on the next match.”
Ferrer will square off against the former world number five, Tommy Robredo, in the last eight. He made an epic comeback from being two-set down to outlast 11th seeded Nicolas Almagro. The 32nd seed recorded
a 6-7(5), 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 score line against Almagro to set-up this epic match.
The sixth seed, Tsonga triumphed over Serbia’s Viktor Troicki with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 score line. He broke his rival’s opening serve and took the initial lead. The French then held his remaining serves and bagged the opener.
In the following set, the local star lifted his game towards the end. He reeled off last four games and clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
Tsonga kept momentum sailing in the third set. He held his entire serves with poise and got the breakthrough in the sixth game, eventually clicking the set with a 6-3 win.
The French number one reflected in a post match presser, "It's always good to win in straight sets. I don't spend too much energy like this. I'm playing well, so all the lights are green. I will have a big match in the next round
and hope I will play my best tennis. Everything is positive. I'm in the quarter-finals here at Roland Garros for the second time. I have nothing to lose."
Next in queue for Tsonga is the 17-time Grand Slam champion, Roger Federer. The Swiss Maestro recorded a 6-1, 4-6, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 score line against 15th seeded Gilles Simon.
