David Ferrer and Juan Martin Del Potro advance into round two – Wimbledon Championships 2013
Spanish number one, David Ferrer, battled past the Argentinean challenger, Martin Alund in a four-set thriller at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Tuesday. The eighth seed, Juan Martin Del Potro, followed Ferrer’s footsteps
and secured a spot in the second round at this third of the four Grand Slam events held in London, United Kingdom.
Seeded fourth in this event, Ferrer lost his track in the second set. However, he lifted his game again and eventually earned the limelight in their first encounter.
The Spanish veteran was quoted in a courtside interview after bagging the match, “It is difficult to play on grass for my game. It is very difficult to defend. Today, the key was the third set. In the important moments, he was
a little bit nervous. I am happy, because I am in second round, but I know that I have to improve my game.”
The world number four, Ferrer, thundered into this match and reeled off four games. He lost his edge in the very next game but stayed focused, subsequently pulled out the opener with a breadstick.
Ranked 101st in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Alund sought his momentum in the following set. He held his entire serves with poise and got the breakthrough in the last game.
In the third set, the Spaniard required a single break of serve in the second last game and clinched the set with a 7-5 score line.
The 31-year-old went on a five-game killing spree in the fourth set and took a 5-1 lead. He held his serve once again and sealed the set by winning six games to two.
Ferrer is in great run of form as he recently made his first final berth at a Grand Slam event. He bowed out to the king of clay, Rafael Nadal, in the final at French Open.
The Argentinean top ranked star on the other hand unleashed his skills and dominated in his battle. He cruised past the Spanish challenger, Albert Ramos, with a breadstick.
The former US Open champion, Del Potro commented in a post match presser, "I feel okay [as it was] my first round against a lefty player. I think I played okay... In the end I broke his serve again. In the third [set] I played
much better, trying to do my game, be aggressive all the time. I think it was a good match for the first round."
The Argentine was forced to skip Mutua Madrid Open and the French Open due to a respiratory virus. He is eyeing to go beyond fourth round at this prestigious event. Del Potro will face off the Canadian challenger, Jesse Levine,
in the round of 64.
