David Ferrer and Juan Martin Del Potro jump one spot up in the rankings – Tennis News
Spanish number two, David Ferrer, won his third straight title in Acapulco last week that boosted his rankings to the world number five. He dethroned the French big gun, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, to take that spot and is just one spot
below his career-high ranking of number four.
He has won two Association of Tennis Professional (ATP) titles on the trot; winning in the Copa Claro in Bueno Aires and Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Mexico. He defeated his fellow compatriot, Nicolas Almagro, in a taxing three-setter
to grab the former title whilst defeated another countryman, Fernando Verdasco, to register a hat-trick of title in Acapulco.
Ferrer has lost just one match in this year at the hands of Novak Djokovic in the quarter-final of the Australian Open. He is definitely in a sublime run of form, started the year in Auckland during the Heineken Open and won the
title over there as well. So he has been dealing in titles, although he was the top seed contestant in each tournament he played except the Grand Slam in Melbourne.
The next tough trial for the Spaniard will start in the Indian Wells, which will be followed by another cracking tournament in Miami. Both these tournament will test the stamina and game style of the Spaniard. He will face tougher
competitors and will definitely try to create an impact, considering that he never gives up at any stage and always fights till the last point.
A devastating 18-1 record this year to date shows his class but he is still to face a battle against tougher opponents. He will enter his 30’s on 2nd of April. He entered the list of Top-10 title winners from Spain with
a triumph in Acapulco; his total tally of ATP titles is 14 at the moment.
Other players that moved in the rankings include the likes of Juan Martin Del Potro and Janko Tipsarevic. Both these players swapped places with Del Potro superseding the Serb to take the ninth spot. He has been a terrific performer
in the recent past especially his prolific performance in the Rotterdam, Open 13 in Marseille and Dubai Duty Free Championships.
He was undone in the final of the ABN AMRO in Rotterdam by the Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer. He was the top seed in the Open 13 and won that tournament. He was again the victim of the Swiss contestant, Federer, in the semi-final
of the Dubai Duty Free Championships. So, his overall performance had been great in recent past that has earned him the ninth spot.
