David Ferrer and Tomas Berdych will lead their sides in the Davis Cup final – Tennis News
World number five, David Ferrer, will going to lead the lions of Spain in the Davis Cup final tie against the team of Czech Republic in the absence of the former world number one, Rafael Nadal. The 30-year-old Spaniard has won
seven titles in the current season and currently playing in the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour Finals.
The captain of the Spanish team, Alex Corretja stated, “Ferrer's leadership has been important in Nadal's absence despite him saying at the start of the year he was not planning to play. He has accepted the challenge and now we
are in the final.” Nadal hasn’t step at the tennis court ever since his second round exit from the Wimbledon Championships in June. He is suffering from the niggling knee injury and can’t take part in any physical sport until he fully recovers; hence, the
duty of leading the squad is shifted to the shoulders of the experienced Ferrer who registered one of the most emphatic seasons of his career.
Ferrer will be heading a strong group of players including the new entrant Nicolas Almagro along with the strong duo of Marcel Granollers and Mark Lopez for the doubles tie. There is no doubt that on paper; the Spanish squad is
clearly the stronger but individual rubbers can go one way or the other that will definitely make the final tie very interesting. It was obviously the grand finale so the best two are playing; hence, the level of discrepancy is quite trivial.
Spain will go head-to-head against the Czech Republic team in the hunt to retain the Davis Cup title. Czech Republic’s squad is led by the sixth ranked star, Tomas Berdych, who will be assisted by the 37th ranked Radek
Stepanek, 84th ranked Lukas Rosol who registered the historic upset against Nadal in the Wimbledon 2012 and 187th ranked Ivo Minar.
Jaroslav Navratil stated in a press conference, “There was no reason to change the team as they played excellent tennis in Argentina. Berdych and Stepanek were clear choices, Rosol is a substitute for singles and Minar has done
a great job so he deserves to be on the team.”
The tie will be played at Prague that will definitely favour the home side. Former world number one, Juan Carlos Ferrero, who retired from the professional tennis at the end of Valencia Open stated, “In Prague I think it is very
difficult to win. The conditions will be very different the court will be very fast and Berdych is playing very good.” Everyone is eagerly waiting for the team event to begin that will kick-off on 16th November at O2 arena, Prague, Czech Republic.
