David Ferrer and Tommy Haas progress into the third round – Wimbledon Championships 2013
Spanish veteran, David Ferrer, triumph over his compatriot, Roberto Bautista-Agut, in a four-set nail-biter at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 on Friday.
The former world number two, Tommy Haas, also stole the show later that day. He eased past the Taiwanese qualifier, Jimmy Wang, in straight sets to progress at this Major grass court event.
Seeded fourth in this prestigious event, Ferrer showed superb tennis skills and outclassed his unseeded compatriot in their first encounter. He required almost three hours to rule the match and booked a spot in the round of 32 at the All England Lawn Tennis
and Croquet Club.
The Spanish number one was quoted in a post match presser, “I am improving my game on grass courts. I am trying to serve wide a lot of times and go to the net to finish points. Today, I play better than the first round. Roberto played a very good match.
He was very tough.”
The 31-year-old lost his serve in the eighth game of the second set and eventually suffered a 3-6 loss. However, he lifted his game again and subsequently registered a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(4), 7-5 score line.
The 35-year-old, Haas found his old form after suffering from several injuries. He eases past the Taiwanese in their second encounter. As a result, the German avenged his loss at the Thailand Open eighth years ago and stayed on track towards the title.
The jubilant Haas stated in a courtside interview after earning the glory, “You can never underestimate any player out there. I just tried to play my game. I felt like I served pretty well and played solid in the right moments.”
With a single break of serve, Haas cruised to a 4-1 lead. The German then held his remaining serves with conviction and sealed the opener by winning six games to three.
Haas went on a four-game killing spree in the following set before the Taiwanese could hold on. He held his composure and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
The German veteran carried his rhythm in the third set. He cashed in a break opportunity and pocketed the set with a 7-5 win.
The German star will square off against Spain’s Feliciano Lopez in the third round.
Haas commented about his upcoming battle, “He obviously is feeling pretty good, no question about it, winning in Eastbourne. He's been having quite an interesting year in my eyes. It’s going to be tough.”
Lopez entered this third of the four Grand Slam events after grabbing a title at the AEGON International on Saturday.
