David Ferrer battles past Milos Raonic into third round – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011
Ranked world No.5, David Ferrer, Spaniard, played his 2nd round match today, Wednesday, 12th October, against the Canadian world No.31, Milos Raonic, defeating the 20-year-old in a close 7-5, 7-6(7) run. Playing
at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, the world No.5 had an hour and 43 minutes battle against the Canadian before he walked of winning the 3rd round seat of the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011 event.
Anyhow, winning the service toss, Ferrer served first for the opening game, however, fell short of winning his opening serve. Breaking early, Raonic took out his opening serve and led the scoreboard 2 games to zero. Ferrer finally
scores a winner to cut down the lead to 2-1.
Extending his lead to 3-1, Raonic added another win before Ferrer cut the lead to 2-3 winning the following game. Winning a game each next, the two stood at 3-4 before Ferrer struck back, breaking the Canadian world No.31 in game
8 to level up the scores, 4-4.
With a game win each, 5-5, the Spaniard served out game 11, before he hammered down the 20-year-old with another breakpoint to win the first set, 7-5, and led the match, 1-0.
With the world No.5 commanding the fixture, Ferrer once again serve first and for the second time in the matches dropped the set opener and for the second time Raonic broke the world No.1 in opening serve, 1-0. Serving out on his
first set serve, the Canadian gained 2 games lead and switched the serve.
Winning his first win of the set, 1-2, Ferrer was unable to break the world No.31 until game 8 when the world no.5 served-break-served and led the set, 5-4. Levelling back, 5-5, Raonic kept on tailing the Spaniard with the set
eventually falling into a tiebreaker.
Ferrer, serving first for the tiebreaker, served out the first two points, however, Raonic played back and levelled up next, 2-2. The match reached to an intensified ending as both levelled up the tiebreaker points at 3-3, 4-4,
5-5, 6-6, and on 7-7.
With Ferrer to serve next, the world No.5 finally outplayed the world No.31, serving out two consecutive points, 9-7, and finished off the set winning, 7-6(7) and the match in straight sets. Although the Spaniard is well differentiated
in ranking, Raonic gave a considerably hard time to the world No.5.
With another Spaniard making his way into the third round of the ATP Masters 1000 event, Ferrer will now play compatriot and the former world No.1, Juan Carlos Ferrero for a seat in the quarterfinal of the event.
