David Ferrer beats Juan Martin Del Potro in the first round robin clash – ATP World Tour Finals 2012
World number five, David Ferrer, won his 11th straight match, as he downed the 2009 US Open champion, Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina, in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 in his first round robin match at the Barclays ATP
World Tour Finals in London on Tuesday.
Ferrer and Del Potro are placed in Group B, with Roger Federer and Janko Tipsarevic being the other two players. Federer easily defeated Tipsarevic earlier in the day and is now at the top of points table, as he dropped fewer games
than Ferrer.
The Spanish number two carried his form from the preceding two weeks into this event. The 30-year-old captured two back to back titles at the Valencia Open 500 and BNP Paribas Masters in Paris before coming into the season ending
championships.
Ferrer drew the first blood in this clash between the two former finalists of the event, as he nailed a break in the fourth game and capitalised on the advantage to grab the opener 6-3.
The pattern of second set was exactly same as the first but this time it was in Del Potro’s favour. The Argentinean hit a blow to Ferrer in the fourth game and held his following serve to attain a 4-1 lead. Del Potro maintained
his lead till the end and closed it 6-3.
Ferrer made a flying start in the decider, capturing opening three games to take a3-0 lead but Del Potro clawed his way back to square it off at 4-4. However, the Argentinean player wasted his entire effort, as he lost eight consecutive
points to go down 4-6.
During the post match press conference, Ferrer said, “It was a really tough match, [it] was very close [and] we had very good rallies. I'm very happy with my game. Maybe this year, I am playing more aggressive with my shots. I
am going to the net more to finish the points.”
Del Potro also praised the Spaniard by saying, “David is playing so well. He won two tournaments in a row [Valencia Open 500 and Paris] and he's playing with a lot of confidence. David was better in the important moments, like
at the end of the match. He broke my serve by playing really well. He never missed a return in the last game.”
Ferrer will take on the world number two, Roger Federer, in his second match on Thursday.
