David Ferrer bounces over Sam Querrey in the semi-finals – Davis Cup WG 2012
World number five, David Ferrer, made an epic comeback from a set down to trounce United States’ Sam Querrey in opening rubber at the Davis Cup World Group semi-finals on Friday. Later that day, Nicolas Almagro stunned John Isner in five sets and let Spain
take a 2-0 lead over the visiting nation.
The top ranked Spaniard in the Davis Cup, Ferrer showed superb tennis to outgun Querrey in their third encounter. He recorded a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Querrey in just over three hours and maintained his unbeaten record on the clay courts in Davis
Cup. As a result, Ferrer improved to a 2-1 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series against the 24-year-old and led his nation inch towards the final showdown.
“I think the first set, he was playing more aggressive than me. I broke him the first game but he played good in the final [part] of the first set,” assessed the Spaniard in a courtside interview after clinching the match. “In the second set, I broke the
first game and I played more consistent and solid... I could have lost the fourth set. He had a lot of chances. I was very focussed on every break point down. Finally I broke him in the last game.”
Ranked 26th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Querrey made a strong entry in front of pessimist crowd at the Parque Hermanos Castro in Gijon. He suffered the first blow in the opening game but recovered in the eighth game and
went 0-2 down. However, the American remained more aggressive and not only snatched the break back in the eighth game but also got the breakthrough in the last game. As a result, he sealed the opener by winning six games to four.
Ferrer re-focused in the following set and never looked back. He got the critical break in the opening game and took the initial lead. The Spaniard held his composure and bagged his entire serves. He broke Querrey’s serve again in the seventh game and clicked
the set with a 6-2 success.
The 30-year-old maintained his intensity in the third set. After Querrey held his serve in the third game, the Spaniard reeled off five games in a row and pocketed the set with a 6-2 win.
The veteran kept momentum rolling towards the proceeding set. He swiftly pocketed his entire serves without facing any real challenge. Ferrer cashed in a break chance in the ninth game and pulled out the victory with a 6-4 score line.
