David Ferrer bows out to Thomaz Bellucci in the second round – Monte Carlo Rolex Masters 2012
Rated at number 45 in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, Brazilian tennis ace, Thomaz Bellucci, registered the biggest upset of the Monte Carlo Rolex Masters this season on Wednesday. The unseeded Brazilian
overwhelmed the world number six, David Ferrer of Spain, in the second round of the ATP Masters 1000 event. The final score line was 6-3, 6-2 in favour of Bellucci.
The crowd at the clay courts of Monte Carlo, Monaco, was stunned by such a dismal performance from the fifth seed Spaniard. Ferrer appeared totally out of form throughout the contest and was seen nowhere near his opponent. He utterly
failed to register a single break point in the entire matchup and kept lagging behind the Brazilian in every aspect of the game to finish on the losing side in the end.
Unseeded Bellucci finally broke the three-match winning streak of Ferrer and curtailed his lead to 1-3 in the all-time head-to-head series. The Spaniard registered three straight sets victories over Bellucci in 2010 and was deemed
as the hot favourite player for winning the Wednesday’s contest. Bellucci exhibited an amazing display of sheer class and domination to absolutely manhandle the fifth seed Spaniard in style, booking a spot in the third round of the star-studded event in Monte
Carlo.
Although the Brazilian delivered just 54 per cent of his first serve on target, he dropped just six points on it, bagging 24 out of 30 points en route to victory. Bellucci crafted a total of nine break opportunities in the match
and converted three of them to drive Ferrer out of the competition in an assertive fashion.
"I didn't play very well," lamented Ferrer. "But my opponent, he was better than me in the first and second set, in every moment. I made lots of mistakes. I am not fast. He plays very aggressive, very consistent. He was better."
Bellucci will face off against the unseeded Dutch opponent, Robin Haase, in the third round draw later this week. Haase disposed of Italy’s Fabio Fognini in the second round clash to book a date with the Brazilian number one.
