David Ferrer commits to feature in the 2013 edition of the Heineken Open – Tennis News
World number five, David Ferrer, will take part in the Heineken Open at Auckland as the top seed contestant and look to defend his title there. It will be a tough task for the Spaniard but he is considered one of the most dangerous
players in the draw and seeing no player from the Top-4 category at his opposite side will make things a bit easier for him.
Ferrer ended the season of 2012 with seven titles; however, his two Round Rubber wins in the Davis Cup Final against the Czech side weren’t good enough for the Spanish squad to clinch the title, contested at Prague. It would have
been a dream ending for the 30-year-old Spaniard. He gave his all but his teammates let him down. However, the new season is just around the corner and players are signing up for the tournaments of their liking to warm-up before the start of the year’s first
Grand Slam Championship, the Australian Open.
Tournament Director, Karl Budge, stated in a press release, “David has now won three Heineken Opens – equalling Kiwi great Onny Parun. If he can also claim next year’s title he will emulate the feats of Australian legend Roy Emerson
in the 1960s. That will be a special day in the tournament’s history.”
Ferrer will make his eighth appearance in the Heineken Open and looks to add another title to his tally which will be his fourth conquest at the hard courts of Auckland. He is probably the most experienced player onboard and the
age factor hasn’t depleted his game at all. He is still a workhorse, running across the court with immense stamina and beating the inferior ranked players with utmost ease.
Two more players that were announced in the same press conference were the likes of the former world number seven, Mardy Fish, who missed the bulk of the current season due to niggling injuries but plans to make a comeback at the
start of the New Year in Auckland. He will be joined by the booming starlet from Belgium, David Goffin, who surprised everyone by his skill and talent in the French Open; reached the fourth round.
