David Ferrer cruises past Lukas Rosol to reach the quarters – Heineken Open 2012
Top seed David Ferrer pounced over Czech Lukas Rosol in straight sets at the Heineken Open 2012, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place on the hard courts in Auckland, New Zealand.
He registered a 6-4, 6-2 victory over the Brno native to advance into the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
World number five, Ferrer, put up top notch performance at the ASB Tennis Centre to not only dump the Czech (ranked 69 spots below him) in their first meeting but also improved to a 17-5 win-loss record at this Australian Open
build-up tournament. He confidently advanced into the final eight where the Colombian, Alejandro Falla, is awaiting for him.
The Spaniard, who is eying for his third title here after triumphing in 2007 and 2011, confidently entered the opening set and held his serve in the second game, levelling the scores at 1-1. He maintained consistency in his game
and continued pocketing remaining serves without facing any breakpoints. Ferrer then capitalised on the only break opportunity in the seventh game and earned the spot light by winning six games to four.
Ferrer kept momentum running into the following set and after Rosol held his serve in the opening game, he went into a five games killing spree. The Spaniard then kept his serve again in the last game and clinched the set with
an assuring 6-2 score line.
Summing up this one hour marathon, the Spanish number two hammered five massive aces, clobbered a better first serve share of 77 percent as compared to Rosol’s 58 percent and clinched 33 out of 41 points on it.
The 29-year-old grabbed only two singles ATP title last year, one in this tournament and the other at Acapulco (trashed Nicolas Almagro in the title-round) but he reached far in almost every tournament. Ferrer also made final appearances
at the Monte Carlo, Shanghai Masters 1000, Barcelona and Bastad ATP events.
His next opponent, Falla secured this spot after fending off early resistance posed by Italia’s Potito Starace. He lost his serve once but broke the Italian’s serve three times, jolting down a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory in 80 minutes
in their second meeting.
Second seeded Spaniard, Nicolas Almagro, will accompany Ferrer in the final eight. He stomped over Colombian Santiago Giraldo in straight sets to reach this place. The Spaniard smashed 11 aces and held entire serves without facing
any breakpoint. He then cashed in three out of eight break chances to register a 6-4, 6-2 success.
