David Ferrer cruises to pre quarters at the Sony Ericsson Open
6th seed Spanish David Ferrer dumps Indian Somdev Devvarman in straight sets on Sunday. The Spaniard registered a 6-4, 6-2 victory over the Indian to advance to the fourth round at Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Miami.
The world number six Spaniard carried his winning ways from the Abierto Mexicano Telcel tournament, which he won after defeating his countryman Nicolas Almagro, to this event and trashed Russian qualifier Igor Kunitsyn with a breadstick
in his opening match. He also made a semi-final berth at the Australian Open earlier this season. After winning two titles this season, Ferrer extended his career titles tally to 11.
He last met the Indian on hard courts at Johannesburg last year and destroyed him with a breadstick. Overwhelming Devvarman again in this tournament, Ferrer extended his lead in their head to head series by 2-0.
The 28-year-old Spaniard was in top form throughout the match. Though he made a bad start in the match and lost his opening serve in the first game but in the second game Ferrer was able to bounce back, courtesy Devvarman’s several
unforced errors.
Both players held their following serves but the 26-year-old Devvarman broke the Spaniard’s serve again and took the lead 3-2. Ferrer quickly exchanged the break back in the follow-up game and levelled the scores at 3-3.
Later both stars held their serves spectacularly until the Spaniard broke the youngsters serve again in the tenth game and won the opening set with a 6-4 score line.
Ferrer carried his winning momentum into the second set and held his serve by smashing a backhand down the line. Devvarman on the other hand kept himself on board by holding his serve due to the Spaniard’s unforced error and levelled
the score 1-1.
Later Ferrer held his serve in the next game and finally earned the coveted break in the fourth game to extend his lead 3-1.
The match wasn’t over now as the in-form Indian re-formed quickly and exchanged the break in the following game and lowered the trail.
After this, the charged up Spaniard deuced the Indian on his service game and then broke his serve again to make the score line 4-2.
Ferrer eventually clinched the set after keeping his serve in the seventh game and converting another breakpoint opportunity to his advantage, securing a 6-2 win.
The Spaniard outclassed the high spirited Indian by smacking 19 winners and by converting 6 out of 14 breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to win the match in straight sets and to advance in the tournament. He also took full
advantage from the 36 unforced errors the Indian committed.
He will next face his compatriot Marcel Granollers who upset 23rd seeded French Michael Llodra in three sets to reach this spot.
