David Ferrer crushes Tommy Robredo to enter semis – Roland Garros 2013
In an all-Spanish affair, fourth seeded David Ferrer got the better of his compatriot, Tommy Robredo, with double breadsticks at the French Open 2013 on Tuesday. He penned down a 6-2, 6-1, 6-1 victory against the former world number
five to secure a spot in the semi-finals at this prestigious clay court event held in Paris, France.
Spanish number two, Ferrer, unveiled his true class at the Stade Roland Garros, managing to overpower his fellow 31-year-old in straight sets and progressed to the final four for the second straight year.
The higher seed made a comfortable start at the Court Suzanne Lenglen. He drew the first blood in the fourth game and leaped to a 4-1 lead. Ferrer then held his serve with poise and capitalised on another break chance to seal the
opener by winning six games to two.
Ferrer maintained his intensity in the following set. He got the critical break in the second game and leaped to a 3-0 lead. After Robredo held his serve in the fourth game, the higher-ranked Spaniard reeled off the next three
games and clinched the set with a breadstick.
Ranked fifth in the Emirates Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Ferrer kept momentum railing in the deciding set. After Robredo held his serve in the opening game, the higher seeded Spaniard went on a six-game killing spree and pocketed
the set with an amazing 6-1 score line.
Summing up the winning Spaniard’s performance, Ferrer produced a lower first serve ratio of 47 per cent in contrast with his rival’s 59 per cent. However, he impressively marked 25 out of 29 points on it to prevail. He also hammered
26 winners and ended the match with 84 points.
Next challenge for Ferrer is the local number one, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. He reflected about his upcoming battle in a post match press conference, "I think it's quite normal [that] the crowd is going to be supporting Jo. He's French
and I am very happy he's made it that far. I'll do everything I can to make it to the final. I have to remain focused. I do realise it's not the first round of a smaller tournament. It's a semi-final. But I'm not going to start dreaming and celebrate before
it's time. It's one match. That's it."
The sixth seed, Tsonga, stunned the former world number one, Roger Federer, in straight sets to set-up this encounter.
Ferrer currently leads the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 3-1 against the Frenchman.
