David Ferrer defeats Benoit Paire in opening match – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Spanish hopes stood high, as the world number six, David Ferrer, won his opening round match against the unseeded Frenchman, Benoit Paire, at the Wimbledon Championships on Tuesday.
The battle took place at the Centre Court of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, with Ferrer registering an assertive straight sets victory at 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, taking just one hour and fifty
five minutes of play.
The one-sided affair was fully dominated by the Spaniard, who is seeded seven in the tournament and displayed his true class to book a berth in the second round of the Grand Slam tournament. Ferrer had no real difficulty in disposing
off the bleak French opponent, whose errant stroke play hugely contributed for his fall in the contest.
The Spaniard has been in sublime form this year and has already won 31 out of 40 singles matches he took part in the running ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season. Ferrer has also won two ATP clay-court championship
titles this season and is reckoned as one of the strongest contenders for the Wimbledon crown this year.
Paire stood absolutely no match for Ferrer in the contest and never appeared in command of his game throughout the competition. Although the French lost the matchup, his number of winners was much better than Ferrer, who scores
19 winners in reply to Paire’s 32.
The French had six chances in the contest where he could have broken his rival but he converted just two of those opportunities to finish on the losing end. Ferrer cracked in five serve breaks out of his eight chances in the game
en route to victory.
The opening set took off with Ferrer breaking the serve and getting early command of the game. The Spaniard amazingly secured 15 out of 16 first serve points and was assisted by 9 unforced errors from Paire before he clinched the
first set at 6-4.
Paire again dropped serve early in the second set but stung his first serve break to get back to even terms. However, he was left answerless when Ferrer broke him once again to seal the second set at 6-4. Spanish domination kept
its intensity in the following set as well and Ferrer went on to break the French serve twice again to seal victory at 6-4.
The seventh seed will now take on lucky loser from the United States, Ryan Harrison, who won his opening round match against Ivan Dodig.
