David Ferrer defeats Jurgen Melzer; makes it to the 2011 Monte Carlo Masters final
Spanish Number 2 David Ferrer scored a straight-sets victory over Jurgen Melzer in his semi-final match at the 2011 ATP World Tour Masters Monte Carlo just seconds ago, ousting his Austrian opponent to secure a spot in the title
match of the clay tournament. Ferrer, who is seeded fourth at the event, ousted Melzer 6-3, 6-2 in their meeting. The match lasted just a little over one hour and eighteen minutes.
Ferrer was in charge of the match from the get-go, although both players managed to score two aces apiece, along with four double faults each. However, Ferrer took 78 per cent of his first serve points while Melzer could only manage
around 60 per cent. Along with this, Ferrer also managed to defend eight of nine break points. Melzer was not as quick, as the Spaniard managed to convert four of four break points successfully. The match was over in less than 80 minutes, as David Ferrer took
an impressive 64 out 110 points for a total of 58 per cent. The final score-line was an easy 6-3, 6-2 for Ferrer.
Both players are 29 years old, and Ferrer is ranked World Number 6 at the time. Melzer is a few spots lower at World Number 9. The two players joined the Association of Tennis Professionals within a year of each other, with Ferrer
becoming a pro later in 2000. Ferrer is obviously the better player, with two 2011 titles already under his belt. He has a total of eleven ATP career titles, while Melzer has only mustered three so far. The two pros have competed against each five times in
the past, and their head to head record is now 4-2 to David Ferrer. Their last meeting was in 2010, when they met in the round of the last 16 at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Paris. Melzer managed to win that battle in three gruelling sets.
David Ferrer will now face World Number 1 and compatriot Rafael Nadal or title match of the tournament.
