David Ferrer defeats Viktor Troicki; eases into the semis at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters
Fourth seeded Spaniard David Ferrer triumphed over 11th seeded Serb Viktor Troicki in straight sets on Friday. He registered a 6-3, 6-3 win over the 25-year-old Serb to advance to the semi-finals of the 2011 Monte Carlo
Rolex Masters in Monaco.
Ranked 6th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Ferrer downed his 10 ranked lower opponent in just one hour and twenty four minutes at Roquebrune-Cap-Martin. He now extended his lead in their head-to-head
series to 3-0.
The Spaniard is enjoying his top form this season winning titles at Acapulco and Auckland. He also reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Although Ferrer did not have much luck at Indian Wells and Miami, Monte-Carlo has
proven to be the Spaniard’s forte. Ferrer best his countryman Feliciano Lopez with a bagel and trashed rising star Canadian Milos Raonic with a breadstick in the first two rounds.
The 29-year-old Spaniard displaying exceptional skills to overpower Serb in straight sets has yet to lose a set at Monte Carlo County Club. In the opening set, he held his serve easily as the Serb sprays a few backhands out of
court. After holding his next serve, Ferrer found the coveted break in the fourth game to take the lead by 3-1. However, he lost his serve in the follow-up game and eventually levelled the scores at 3-3. The Spaniard converted another breakpoint to his advantage
in the eighth game by raising the level of play in the middle. He then held his serve comfortably in the proceeding game to win the set with a 6-3 score line.
He kept his momentum rolling and broke the youngsters serve in the very first game but gave the break back in the proceeding game to square the scores 1-1. Ferrer then went on savage mode and reeled off next four games in a row
to extend his lead to 5-1. Afterwards his gameplay dropped as he lost next two games by clobbering several unforced errors and many double faults. However Ferrer clinched the set with a 6-3 win again after breaking Troicki’s serve for the fourth time.
Ferrer hammered 17 winners and earned 70 percent win on his higher first serve share to win easily. He will next face seventh seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer.
