David Ferrer dismantles Feliciano Lopez in semi-final – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011
Spanish world No.5, David Ferrer made his way into the final of Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011, hammering out compatriot, Feliciano Lopez, with a superb comeback win, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-3, in the semi-final round on Saturday 15thOctober, in a long two hour and eleven minutes match at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena in Shanghai, China.
Serving out first, Ferrer charged in winning the first game of the match rolling down the score card, 1-0. Lopez followed with a winner, opening serve, 1-1, and stood to return again. The two played brilliant net plays and cross-court rallies, levelling up at 2-2, 3-3, 4-4 and then at 5-5.
With just two more games left for either of the two to win the set, both won a game each and ended up in a tiebreaker. With Ferrer serving first took out point one, however, Lopez covered up every time. At 5-5, Lopez broke and served the winner, 7-5, to bag the first set, 7-6(5) and led the match, 1-0.
Continuing with the second set starter, Lopez served out the opening game of set 2, 1-0, followed up by a winner by compatriot, levelling up the scores at 1-1. Breaking the veteran next, Ferrer pulled away another winner extending his lead to 2-1, and then to 3-1, winning the next game on his serve.
Serving out next, Lopez covered up a bit, 2-3, however, could not hit an equalizer. Ferrer, on the other hand, kept the pressure and maintained the two games lead. With scores now at 5-3, the higher ranked Spaniard struck with the winner. Breaking Lopez, the 29-year-old levelled up the match scores winning the set, 6-3, and onto the next decider.
The match starting was certainly a hope for the lower ranked Spaniard, Lopez; however, Ferrer did prove his reputation of a comeback winner as he slammed the second set.
Slamming a triple game point winner in the start, world No.5 took out game 1 and switched the serve. Lopez instantly equalized winning game 2 and held his end to return again, 1-1. Rallying out a game each, the two contenders levelled up at 2-2 before the higher ranked Spaniard blew his compatriot apart.
Serving out game 7, Ferrer jolted the 30-year-old with a super double breakpoint winner, game 8, and led the match to its ending, 5-3. With one more win to go, the 29-year-old bedazzled Lopez with another double game point winner and went down to his knees to scream out his remarkable comeback win.
Ferrer now moves into the title match of the Masters event where he is scheduled to play top ranked Brit, Andy Murray.
